ASUS UX32VD – Install Windows 8 x64 on fresh SSD with UEFI Bootable USB Media

ASUS UX32VD shipped with Microsoft Windows 8 x64 preloaded and configured in UEFI mode. Legacy-based boot media will therefor not boot successfully. To create UEFI bootable USB media that can be used to install Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 64-bit operating systems, follow the steps below: Open a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges in either Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro. Insert the target USB boot media device into an available USB port. Type “DiskPart” in the command prompt. Type “List Disk” (make note of the disk number of the target USB drive). Type “Select Disk X”, where X is the target USB drive noted in step 4. Type “Clean”. ...

Run Windows 2012 Data Deduplication on Windows 8 2

My ASUS Zenbook is a powerful beast, but because I run some virtual lab environments in Windows 8 Hyper-V, I ran short on SSD disk space. Normally there’s only one possibility, by a larger SSD, but this time I found some post about “borrowing” the Windows 2012 data deduplication functionality. Actually it’s possible to move this feature of Windows 2012 to Windows 8. I followed the instructions and it worked wonderful for me. I regained 75% of disk space on my Hyper-V Lab partition. If you follow the next steps remember that this only works on 64-bit Windows 8 and future updates can be a problem. Here are the easy steps: ...

WDS [Windows Deployment Services] – Move RemoteInstall To New Location

In my last post I had to fix the backup by moving the WDS RemoteInstall Directory from the originating disk to a new location of my liking. The solution is actually rather simple. Run a Command Prompt or PowerShell as administrator and follow the next steps: Command: WDSUTIL /uninitialize-server Move the RemoteInstall directory to the new location Command: WDSUTIL /Initialize-Server /RemInst:NewDriveLocation:\RemoteInstall (example: WDSUTIL /Initialize-Server /RemInst:D:\RemoteInstall) That’s all. WDS RemoteInstall has moved. Tweet

Set Up Server Backup Forces Full Disk Backup of Non-System Disk

I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup with 4 x 1TB disks. I needed to reconfigure my backup settings because one of the disks had grown and so did the backup disk up to maximum capacity (In other words, it was full). I decided that I wanted to leave out the whole disk all together but Set Up Server Backup forced the backup of the disk with the following message: Server Backup requires that you back up this item to ensure that you can restore the operating system in the event of a catastrophic failure. I didn’t understand the reason till I remembered I installed MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) ...

Windows 8 Product Key Deactivation

It’s the end of the year and I bought myself a new laptop. Although it came with Windows 8 and upgraded it to Pro, I had to install a fresh installation of Windows 8 Pro for some stupid/buggy reasons (still frustated, something with missing groups when using upgrade). So I needed to remove the license from my old laptop and bring it over to the new one. To achieve this I used the following procedure: Press Windows key + X Click Command Prompt (Admin) Type: slmgr.vbs -upk + ENTER This will uninstall the product key from the computer and set it back to trial mode. The key is now available ...
