My PowerShell Profile Configuration

UPDATE 20131028: Added snap-in registration I thought it would be nice to share my PowerShell profile settings as a starter for new users. It’s rather basic, I only added a few things to make my PowerShell console ready from the start. But first some easy tips to check and if needed create a profile. Test if you have a PowerShell Profile. Start Powershell and type: Test-Path $PROFILE If the result is “False” you don’t have a PowerShell profile. Let’s create one: New-Item -Path $PROFILE -Type File -Force This will create an empty profile. Now we can edit the profile file: Notepad $PROFILE In this profile I’ve put in the following things: ...

Remove background of an image without annoying pixels around the edges

Sometimes I want to modify images for a website and make them transparent. When I remove the background, background pixels are still visible and I always wondered what the best solution would be to resolve this. I found this post of blogger Haishi that resolved it for me. The method is done with GIMP, a free image editing tool. Just follow the next few steps: Open the picture in GIMP. In Layers window, right-click the layer and select Add Alpha Channel. Duplicate the layer. Hide the lower layer, then select the top layer. Use color selection tool to select background. Use Select->Grow menu to grow the selection by 1-2 pixels. ...

Add SkyDrive as a drive to Windows RT 1

Windows RT has a SkyDrive Metro application, but it’s not possible to see SkyDrive content from the Windows RT desktop. Fortunately, it’s possible to add a shortcut: Open Internet Explorer and go to http://skydrive.com/ Once logged in, right-click the Files menu item and select Copy Shortcut This will give a shortcut in this format: https://skydrive.live.com/#cid=123456789ABCDEFG (You care about the part after cid=; e.g., 123456789ABCDEFG, which is your CID value. We will need this later.) Open Explorer on the Windows RT device and select Computer in the navigation pane; in the Computer tab of the ribbon select Map network drive For the path, enter the following: https://d.docs.live.net/ (e.g. https://d.docs.live.net/123456789ABCDEFG) Click Finish; ...

Update Office 2013 RT failes with Error Code 5052

Since today I’m the owner of a ASUS VivoTab RT and the first thing you have to do with any Windows system is updating and Windows RT is no exception. Everything went well until I tried to update Office 2013 RT to the final version. At this point the update process just stopped and gave an error code 5052. Microsoft will give you some tips here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2748583) , but no luck for me. Then I opened task manager and noticed the “Office Document Cache Handler” process. I killed it and then started the update again. Finally, and slowly, the update finished. Tweet

Windows 8 Product Key Deactivation

It’s the end of the year and I bought myself a new laptop. Although it came with Windows 8 and upgraded it to Pro, I had to install a fresh installation of Windows 8 Pro for some stupid/buggy reasons (still frustated, something with missing groups when using upgrade). So I needed to remove the license from my old laptop and bring it over to the new one. To achieve this I used the following procedure: Press Windows key + X Click Command Prompt (Admin) Type: slmgr.vbs -upk + ENTER This will uninstall the product key from the computer and set it back to trial mode. The key is now available ...
